Drug Driving. Your Eyes Will Give You Away.
November's rural road safety campaign is aimed at warning drivers of the dangers and consequences of drug driving.
Drug drivers can suffer from;-
• Slower reaction times
• Erratic and aggressive
behaviour
• An inability to concentrate
properly
• Nausea
• Hallucinations
• Panic conditions
• Paranoia
• Tremors (or ‘the shakes')
• Dizziness and fatigue
It is an offence to drive while unfit through drugs. If a police officer suspects a driver is under the influence of drugs, he can check the driver's eyes with a pupil measure indicator. Cannabis causes the blood vessels in the eyes (and elsewhere) to become larger. The police will also notice a bloodshot appearance. The consequences of a drug drive conviction are devastating and farreaching. The penalties are the same as for drink driving:
• a minimum 12-month driving ban
• a criminal record
• a fine of up to £500
